Old, then New writing

Explain Old, then New with overhead text: Old then New Paragraph structure often is built with old information first, with a piece of new information added. That new information becomes “old” for the reader, and another new piece is added. This old + new, old + new structure is psychologically satisfying to the reader. Reflection on Reflections from UH ENGL 1303

I usually ask students to reflect on their writing as they complete a paper. This was the first time I had assigned a first-person description of a community to a first-semester course. Their reflections are interesting -- confidence (not surprising) but sometimes astute observations on their own process. "I liked that we do another peer-examination with the final paper without turning in. This because sometimes, when you have written your paper, and you have read it for a thousand times, it is difficult to find simple mistakes that others can see easily." True, though sometimes I catch minor errors by reading my own work out loud. Different parts of the brain working, etc. More importantly, though, I get ideas from reading my peers. I can see what works for them, and sometimes I choose to incorporate that same strategy in my writing. "I have learned to not over think about the topic." Definitely. A Good Day

19 August In all, it was a busy and productive day. I woke up early (6:00, which needs to be the new norm) to get to campus by 7:45. There had been some overlap in emails between three parties, so I wanted to be sure that I was at least present on time if needed. Arrived at the Ezekiel Cullen building before 8:00 to meet with Rick Valdez of the Human Subjects Committee who was helping Dr. Lindahl and me prepare our applications. Fortunately, we decided that I would return at 9:30 when Dr. Lindahl arrived to save everyone some time. There, we discussed some edits, corrections, and suggestions from their office to our application. Though I considered the edits to be significant, and with only one day till the applications are due, I was increasingly concerned. Still, it had to be done. During the meeting I received a call from Dr. Mazella of the CTE. He was ensuring I was on campus and ready to meet him and his team at Farrish Hall, so I left one meeting and went immediately to an

Grace under Pressure

18 August 2010 Up at 6:30, walked Rox, came back and relaxed for a while, even though the Internet is out at the house. Finally got dressed to go cycling at 8:30 and rode 10 miles ( http://goo.gl/maps/OC4L though the map says 12 miles and I know it's only 10). I suppose I don't really enjoy cycling, but that's because I don't do it enough. But it was an accomplishment, and next time I'll go to 15 miles. Perhaps Saturday go to Tomball, about 35 miles round-trip. Was content at home, about 11 o'clock and gradually getting ready to go to LSC and grade papers, work on syllabus, etc, when I got a call from Dave Mazella (UH Center for Teaching Excellence), explaining what he expected at his presentation. I was prepared for one tomorrow, but not today. So I quickly dressed and drove too fast down I-45, rushed over the washboards of Cullen, fortunately found easy parking in my economy lot, then huffed across campus to Cullen. Criticizes Flower's use of collaborative groups: she overlooks the likely misreadings of students as a reflection of different personal paradigms. Claims that Flowers does not appreciate “writing to learn” as part of the composition process. Completely dismisses cognitive as only a mechanical problem-solving and systems analysis methodology. Defends her “Heuristics” paper by claiming that Berthhoff interpreted “heuristics” as “problem solving,” and then uses that term too narrowly, only from educational psychology. Re-emphasizes (clarifies) that problem solving within the realm of creativity seeks “reasonable answers and is open-ended” and is not bound by rules, but can use heuristics as “flexible guides to effective guessing” (209). Much of this article directly attacks Berthoff's assumptions and claims, Lauer herself arguing that Berthoff misrepresents the original bibliography, quotations from Jerome Bruner, and terminology both in Lauer's article and in the field of psychology itself.

Heuristics, are "rules of discovery and invention" (396) that guide the "experience of creativity." Those in rhetoric and composition working on theories of invention would, Lauer contends, find her collection of resources from psychology to be of tremendous  significance as they work through matters of heuristics and problem solving. Also calls for a metatheory of rhetoric that would specify what methods of discovery the field must used. Presentation in Narrative

Presentation last night in History of Narrative went well, so says professor and a few students. The topic was "cosmic narrative: ancient human migration." Started with a 20 minute video I purchased off the Web; chose this because 1) it would take up time, but more importantly 2) would best review the science of the theories and demonstrate how scientists "tell" their theory in narrative form. It was a good choice to do this -- the seminar participants were interested and I was able to use much of the narration to support my later claims. Followed with about 15-20 minutes of my own discussion interspersed with some slide presentations. With video, presentation, and follow-up discussion, my portion of the evening took approximately one-and-a-half hours, and I was able to hold my own and Dr. Wood's reaction was definitely positive. I've taught, including this semester, 34 courses at LSC Three sections at UH Thirteen sections at HCC That's 53 sections. Averaging 20 students (more at the beginning the semester), that's 1060 students that I've contacted at some point.

Week 2

Overwhelmed with the reading for my three courses already. Monday's seminar on composition was itself dense, and the assigned reading of 200 pages of history of composition is very dense and of course boring. But boring shouldn't be an issue for professional studies, I know. It would be nice to have reading that isn't boring, but that's not going to be the case. Wood's seminar on myth Tuesday was nearly completely uninteresting or useful. The student presenter rambled for nearly 30 minutes without adding anything useful to the understanding of narrative. Perhaps I'm the only one who has read about myth (thank FARMS and Nibley for that, I suppose), but the level of discussion I felt was undergraduate, not graduate caliber. Rothman's seminar on newspapers and journalists from the 18th century was at least interesting, if not slow. I would prefer that he make his seminar more interactive with more assigned discussions, but he, like so many of the profs here

Narrative

Dr. Barry Wood is an older man, teaching for at least 40 years, with a breadth of research and scholarship. He doesn't seem too friendly with technology, and in fact encouraged us not to use e-mail to communicate with him, but has an understanding of ideas that would seem to include the advent of technology, and certainly the ideas that bring about technological changes. I know four of the folks in the seminar: Mandy and another woman who were in Folklore last semester; Chris Webb who was in Bibliography, and another woman who might have been in Bibliography as well (quiet, one of those who rarely say anything ... like me, I suppose). I sat near a guy who is Post-Bac, Alan, and we struck up a conversation. I was disappointed that Wood didn't have everyone introduce themselves or call out a roll, since I was prepared to mark everyone's name down in my page of "Who are the People in my Neighborhood" in my journal. First Day 2010 Teaching

Two early sections of ENGL 1301 at LSC. About 20 showed in each section, which means I'll have one show on Thursday who is behind and expects special attention. I noticed within an hour that I was losing my voice, having not used my teaching voice in nearly a month. Nothing changes from semester to semester, so I wonder how long I can handle this monotone of instruction. I can only hope the students bring something new each semester. The online course began this morning too. Always nervous about these, as so many students drop out. I'm going to have to spend more time with audio and video podcasting, since that seems to help them out. But most students who take online courses -- most undergrads at least -- and certainly those who take ENGL 1301 or 1302 -- -- are unprepared for online courses; they think it will be like playing on Facebook and are surprised that reading is required and writing is extensive. Still, I feel guilty that so many fail or drop out. Tomorrow first d
